We wrote this post on how to hire any remodeling contractor. Advice on ways best to avert a remodeling nightmare.
Having worked several years for other home remodeling contractors, we heard a couple of things besides construct a room addition or how to waterproof a shower correctly. We learnt firsthand that there are contractors that were evil out there lying and looking to take advantage of you.
The bad and ugly
“Some” contractors will inform you anything to sell the job. They will make promises and make up stories. Who wishes to work with somebody like this or have to deal with that person for 3 months or so? You will only need a contractor that has your back. Will do anything which is necessary to make the work right and also make you more happy. At least that is what we believe that a contractor must do. The sad truth is some contractors view your project as a money making experience and much less as one remodeling experience. We know of contractors twice your age with half of the knowledge. They are only businessmen with not much construction experience.
Look out for salesmen! Maybe a it has only been a week since they have the job and After getting fired from the car dealer. My experience with sales folks is that they will tell you exactly what you are currently searching to hear to close the sale and don’t understand the details. When the job has been built they won’t be around. Who will be responsible for running your job and the workers? Talk to the contractor! You will need to talk to their references. Call the homeowner and ask a whole lot of questions for example, did they perform as promised? Can they create change orders? Can they finish on time? How can you rate the quality?
We also recommend speak to the homeowner and to see the recently finished job and see that the work on your own. In the process, be sure that the contractor does not go. They won’t mind if the client was really happy and they’ll be happy to promote the contractors business. Think about it, they were in your shoes a few months ago.
Get it in writing
Ensure you have the details all in writing. Make Sure you do not pay before work completion and have a payment / progress schedule. Get a start and finish date. We have observed remodeling contractors blame the homeowner because the job did not go as intended. Do not offer them a budget that would be like giving your credit card to a child. You must have a comprehensive list of what it is you’re getting for this amount and a set price.
Do not be scared
This article is meant to protect you, not scare you. You will find good remodeling contractors on the market, but you have to secure your home for the ones that are terrible as you need to be educated. Bear in mind to watch out for the wolf in sheep’s clothing or something like this.
Lastly, check on the internet for reviews and the contractors’ board.
